The Ebbsfleet name is Anglo-Saxon but the valley’s story goes back to pre-historic man, who hunted elephants across Europe: His Neolithic descendants bequeathed decorative pottery known as Ebbsfleet ware. Then came Bronze Age Beaker people and Iron Age Celts to lay the tracks for the famous Roman road from Dover to London. On that road, Ebbsfleet valley became home to a Roman temple at Springhead, and then an Anglo-Saxon settlement remarkable for the earliest horizontal waterwheel found in England.
