Pochantas
The story of Pochantas is well known, but what is less well known is that it was Gravesend’s role as a gateway by sea which led to her being buried here. She was taken ill in London and had to be brought by road to Gravesend to board a vessel for the return journey to America. Sadly she died before that journey started and is buried in Gravesend. Last year a plaque was unveiled as part of a ceremony to remember Pocahontas.
The ceremony was led by Stephen Jordan, Managing Director of London & Continental Railways in the presence of several North American Indian Chiefs from Virginia, Teachers and pupils from the local St Botolph’s school also attended the event.
